Getting to Milford Sound from Queenstown or Te Anau| New Zealand
Milford Sound is undoubtedly one of the most-visited tourist spots in New Zealand. Located in the Fiordland National Park, it is known for towering mountains and waterfalls plummeting down its steep sides. However, getting to this remote spot takes a whole journey.
Drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound:
Please do not attempt to drive to Milford Sound from Queenstown for a day trip. I know, there are plenty of day tours out there – but it‘ll be the most stressful thing you‘ll do during your stay in New Zealand. Realistically, you will drive around 4 hours one-way to Milford Sound from Queenstown. Although it‘s only 280km, the trip will take time as there is only one road to Milford Sound, known to be quite busy.
Drive from Te Anau instead:
If you want to visit Milford Sound, visit from Te Anau instead! We stayed there for 2 nights and it was the best decision ever! The small town is a 170km drive (2 hours) from Queenstown and offers many activities for old and young.
From Te Anau you can reach Milford Sound in 110km, which is around 1.5 hours. So hassle-free!
